Scouting and implementing emerging technologies for biomedical research in Basel.
TechWatch Basel is a campus-wide platform for identifying, evaluating, and adopting the next generation of life-science technologies, wherever they emerge across imaging, sequencing, proteomics, spatial profiling, single-cell methods, AI-assisted analysis, and beyond. Built bottom-up by the researchers and core facilities who will use them.
A partnership of leading Basel life-science institutions.
TechWatch Basel is built and run jointly by the institutions that anchor biomedical research on the Basel campus.

Researcher-led, momentum-driven.
The platform follows the technologies that researchers and core facilities want to evaluate next, and moves first where the community already has momentum.
Starting where the energy is
Our initial focus is spatial profiling, chosen because multiple Basel groups are already actively engaged and the technology landscape is moving fast enough to need coordinated benchmarking.
Method-agnostic framework
The same scout → prototype → benchmark → implement cycle works for any emerging life-science technology: imaging, sequencing, proteomics, single-cell, AI tools. Spatial is the first use case, not the limit.
Future areas, same way
New focus areas join when researchers and core facilities surface them through the TechWatch Forum. Demand drives scope; the committee coordinates rather than prescribes.
Dense excellence, dense opportunity.
Life-science technology is advancing on many fronts at once: high-resolution imaging, single-cell and spatial methods, proteomics, AI-assisted analysis. The choices made by individual labs and facilities increasingly determine what biological questions are answerable. No single group can keep up alone; coordination at campus scale gets Basel ahead.
For academic partners
Low-barrier access to cutting-edge technology; shared benchmarking and implementation; cost-effective exploration in a pre-competitive setting.
For industry partners
Co-define benchmarking standards, engage with clinical specimens and core biological questions, and reach researchers and customers early.
For technology partners
Prototype in high-end facilities, showcase technology against attractive use cases, and connect with stakeholders across the Basel ecosystem.
Scout → Prototype → Benchmark → Implement.
A four-stage framework with explicit decision points and a shared committee. Each stage involves core facilities, research groups, technology and industry partners.
1 · Scouting
TechWatch Forum identifies promising technologies with research groups, facilities and partners.
2 · Prototyping
Hands-on prototyping with technology partners in close exchange with industry.
3 · Benchmarking
Shared, transparent benchmarks across institutions and use cases.
4 · Implementation
Roll-out into core facilities; joint usage considered across Basel.
